How To Care For Your Teddy Bear

We don’t know about you, but our Teddy Bears take care of us in many ways. They’re there when we’re sad, when we’re happy and when all we need is a hug – so it’s only fair that we take care of them in return!

But how? Do we put them in the washing machine? Clean them with a wipe? If you’re not sure, don’t worry! We’ve got everything you need to know about keeping your bear in tip-top condition!

What causes damage?

  • Handling – Too much handling can cause material to tear or weaken, and loosen joints. We love to hold our teddies and give them a cuddle but consider this before doing so too often!
  • Dust – An all too common enemy, dust can cause your bear to turn a funny shade of grey (as it does with shelves and windowsills when left untouched).
  • Sunlight – If you leave your bear in direct sunlight to often it can cause the colour to fade.
  • Insects – Something you may not have even considered is that insects could get into your teddy bear. They love warm, dark places and if a teddy is left sitting for long periods of time they may just make it their home! If you suspect bugs are nesting in you precious bear, pop it in a freezer bag and into the freezer for 48 hours – this will kill off the insects.

Now, of course, we advise all our customers to check the label on the bear as cleaning suggestions can differ from brand to brand, but if you follow these simple steps, your bear is sure to be looking its best for years to come!

Avoid the washing machine or cleaning too regularly!

For most luxury bears the washing machine is a no go, it can do more harm than good as the bear will be spun and hit the sides of the barrel. If you’ve got a plush bear, the washing machine could be an option but it’s best to check the label or with the brand. If for some reason you absolutely have to use the washing machine, place the bear in a white pillow case or mesh bag first!

Shake it out

Give your bear a gentle shake and brush every day, this will keep the dust away and keep its lovely locks looking lush. If you can adjust the suction of your vacuum cleaner, you could also give your bear a very gentle vacuum to remove dust and dirt.

Keep out of direct sunlight

Sunlight can cause the fur of your bear to fade – even if it’s from across the room. Be sure to keep the curtains drawn on very sunny days and consider storing you teddy in a dark room. If you’re worried about fading, consider having some clothes made for your bear, this will cover it and keep it out of the light (also, it will look super cute).

Clean once a month

There are options other than the washing machine! We advise to clean your bear with a damp white cloth, a coloured cloth could transfer onto the bear and the white cloth will show up the dirt you’re removing! You can then air dry the bear in a drying bag on the washing line or by using the “cool” setting on a hair dryer. Once dry, brush out the hair with a wide toothed comb or dog brush.

Store in a cool dry place

If you have to store your bear, never do so in plastic as it can cause moisture to build and promote mould and damp. Wrap your teddy in cotton or acid free paper and place it in a cardboard box to keep it safe and sound!

Most importantly – Love your Teddy Bear!

The best advice we can give you is to love and enjoy your teddy bear! If it has a hole or a tear, fix it straight away before it gets worse! If you’re not so handy with a sewing kit then take it to a specialist or a teddy bear hospital. Keep it lasting as long as possible so you can treasure it for years to come!

5 Reasons why Mothers are Best

Mother’s Day may not have the same status as holidays like Christmas, but it’s still a very important day of the year! Mothering Sunday originated as a holiday celebrated by Christians, it falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter.

It was originally a celebration of “mother church” but has now evolved into a day for children to honour their Mothers. Mothers are special – everyone has one and they are usually the matriarch of the family (even if some Fathers think otherwise) – so the least we can do is make them feel extra special for one day of the year!

Here are our top five reasons why mothers are simply the best, and some handy gift ideas to show how much you appreciate them this Mother’s Day:

1. She’s the reason you’re here!

Whether you like it or not, if it wasn’t for your mum carrying you around for nine months and taking care of you for your whole life, you wouldn’t exist. For this reason alone, I’d say she deserves an Alexander Bear from Suki. This fellow gives a substantial hug, thanks to his chunky persona!

2. She’ll be proud of you no matter what!

It doesn’t matter what you do or how silly you are, your mum will always be proud. Don’t believe me? Well, do you remember those awful “works of art” you created when you were a child out of glitter, string and PVA glue? Your Mum still has them. For having to endure that, she should receive Kaycee Bears’ Del. He’s a most luxurious bear made from plush fur and cashmere.

3.  She always manages to make you feel better!

A mother may not have a degree in psychology or a qualification in life coaching, but somehow she always knows just what to say. There’s nothing better than a pep talk and cuddles with mum to make you feel like you’re the most special person in the world. Why not treat her to a Mummy & Baby Sunshine Turtle, if only to remind her of how cute you were as an innocent baby.

Mother's Day Bears

4. She gives the best presents!

Your mum knows you better than anyone else as she keeps track of your likes and dislikes, and also takes an interest in you! It only makes sense that she gives great presents, so it’s time you returned the favour by treating her to Camelot from Kaycee Bears. She’s fierce and protective like a dragon, so why shouldn’t she have one?

5. She always puts you first!

Mothers will always put their children first, they are the most selfless type of human being. I would bargain that your mum would even give you her last Rolo, and if that’s not love worth rewarding I don’t know what is. How about Steiff’s Elmar as a reward? He’s made of the finest plush and he’s ready for a cuddle! Your Mum just might need him for when you’re not around.

Sometimes we can take Mums for granted, and that’s why they deserve a treat this Mother’s Day! We have a huge range of adorable bears which would make the perfect present to express just how special your Mum is to you!

Tough Ted – My Favourite Teddy Bear

Tough Ted, a robust teddy, was given as a gift, to our first born. His diminutive name reflects his size. Small enough to sit in an adult’s hand, he boasts a tough exterior though he has a gentle heart.

He arrived wearing a white singlet proclaiming his name. The singlet is no more….. I suspect a Bratz doll or a Barbie claimed it along the way. On his arm he proudly bears a tattoo of an anchor. I believe he may have spent some time at sea. The inking has hardly weathered and remains as clean as the day he acquired it.

Over the years, determined children, armed with felt tips, have made every effort to customise it, but Tough Ted has resisted. He is not the sort of bear to have a tattoo removed on a whim. He may have mislaid his singlet, but he is keeping his tattoo!

His snout is slightly too big for his face, as though it has weathered several punches. While his ripped, torn ear testifies to a particularly vicious fight. Not handsome, in the conventional sense, his recessed dark eyes are slightly too small. But he is appealing. His fragile stuck-on nose betrays his vulnerability.

A stoical mini bear, he has weathered many storms and emerged, a survivor, his quizzical smile intact. Now semi-retired, he spends most of his time snuggled in a toy box below the stairs, occasionally putting in a guest appearance when required. He is in good shape and has hardly changed since the day he joined our family.

I notice that he has a Facebook page, and that someone has written a book about his exploits. He has never alluded to them. I doubt if he even knows of their existence. He does not court publicity. He accepts attention graciously but is not overawed by it. I expect it is important for him to maintain his tough veneer.

Sylvanian Families are on their way!

We are very excited to announce that Sylvanian Families will be available on Toy Street in the not so distant future!

Sylvanian Families have been around for decades and, after a slump in the late 1990s, they are making a mighty comeback with a modern twist. Originally, the lives of the animal figures were based on rural 1950’s Britain but there is now a whole new modernisation of the lovable creatures.

Sylvanian Families Town is now available and includes sweet shops, department stores and even trams! Let’s take a closer look at this amazing toy brand.

Sylvanian Families – The History

Sylvanian Families was founded in 1985 by Japanese gaming company Epoch, with the idea of a combination of doll houses and woodland animal figures which included rabbits, deer and mice. The franchise became an instant hit, winning the UK Toy of the Year award for three years running.

The setting was based on a typical nuclear family of Mum, Dad, son and daughter who lived in rural Britain, in large multi-story houses and enjoyed middle-class pass times such as horse riding, canoeing and garden parties. The Mothers looked pretty in their floral pinafores, whilst the fathers were dressed to carry out their rural work.

In 1987, an animated TV series was created based on the toy range. The show ran for 13 episodes and was very popular in the UK and Spain, before being broadcast over in America by Nickelodeon. It was the success of the show that led to expansions into Western Europe, with Tomy acquiring exclusive rights for the UK.

The toys were sold worldwide, but by the late 1990s they were discontinued in the UK because of poor sales. But after several years of decline, in 2013 they were back and are still currently being distributed in the UK.

Family Background

The entire Sylvanian Families collection is set in the fictional village of Sylvania, which was based on 1950s Britain. The majority of the families were middle-class and had jobs like being a doctor, teacher, artist, news reporter, carpenter, and bus driver.

The series covered a whole host of different woodland creatures, such as rabbits, squirrels, beavers and bears. Most families consist of a father, mother, sister and brother, and continue to add family members from there on such as grandparents, babies, and older siblings.

NEW – Sylvanian Families Town

Sylvanian Families are being brought into the 21st century and we couldn’t be happier. You can now buy terrace houses, have a macaroon in the Chocolate Lounge and even enjoy a ride along on a tram! A Town Girl Series is also available which includes Silk Cat, Toy Poodle and Chocolate Rabbit who all come dressed very glamorous with the option of additional outfits that can be bought separately.

There are also alternative family sets from the typical nuclear family, for example the Brightfield Goat Family have two daughters and the Darwin Monkey Family only have one child. Although this doesn’t seem like much it’s a big step for the Sylvanian Family world.

Oldies but goodies

If you have any Sylvanian Families in your loft that you’ve been meaning to throw out but never got around to – think again, you could be in luck. There are a range of vintage Sylvanian Family sets and figures that are selling for a small fortune.

A 1980’s Japanese Timbertop Bear sold for £450 last year, whilst The Japanese Doll of the Year 2003 has had bids of over £500. These are obviously rare, but if you were lucky enough to have the Country Manor House for example, complete with all the furniture and figures, you could earn yourself a good £200.

Coming Soon

Sylvanian Families have announced a new range of families which are coming later this year. Included in this new range is the Marshmellow Mouse Family, which consists of Dad (Bernard), Mum (Bianca), Sister (Katherine) and Brother (Christopher) as well as Baby Brother (Albert) and Marshmellow Mouse Triplets (Mary, Edward and Elizabeth) – Bernard and Bianca sure do have their hands full!

As well as this new family there is also a Grocery Market that will go on sale this year, which includes a checkout counter with conveyor, baskets and food shelves complete with all your everyday essentials. Exciting times ahead!

Keep your eyes peeled for your favourite Sylvanian Families on Toy Street soon!

Kosen Bears – A Closer Look

We have a fantastic range of products from the German teddy bear manufacture, Kosen Bears. The company have been producing soft toys for over 100 years now and have become a firm favourite among collectors and teddy bear fans alike.

Let’s a little look at the history of Kosen Bears.

Kosen Bears – The Early Days

Kosen Bears was originally a doll-making company, founded by Käthe Kruse in 1911/12. Their first workshop, in Bad Kösen, Germany, employed around 100 people to produce Kruses’ world-famous dolls.

In 1949, Kruse left Bad Kösen to set up a new company in Donauwörth together with her children. This left the company sitting in administration for a brief period after World War Two, however it was saved in 1953 and was nationalised by People’s Enterprises (VEB) Doll-Making Workshops.

It wasn’t until 1958, at the Leipzig Trade Fair, that we saw plush animals from the company. They were so popular that Kosen had to increase production in order to meet the demand for their plush animals. Such was the success of the animals, the doll production ceased in 1964.

The company was renamed five years later and become VEB Kösener Spielzeug. At this time up to 80% of the plush animal production was exported and the number of employees, mainly women, grew to 195.

For the next 10 years, the company would work closely with Burg Giebichenstein from the College of Art and Design in Halle. This partnership led to several creative products coming to life and brought some more designers to the company.

Dawn of the Lifelike Plush Animals

Unfortunately, due to the fall of the Iron Curtain, the company’s markets virtually disappeared overnight, and they had no real hope of survival. Briefly, Margarete Steiff showed interest in purchasing the company, however after two year of co-operation she decided against it.

In 1992, a local company (Schache) stepped in and saved the company from extinction. It was from this moment onward that the company focused solely on producing high quality, lifelike plush animals.

Kosen Bears began to develop their own distinctive style, which several new designs being created. In 2000, Kosen acquired the Silke brand, a collection of high quality textile dolls and animals for infants and toddlers. Production was relocated from Munich to Bad Kosen where the collection was further developed.

Production

Since they were saved by Dr. Schache’s company, Kosen Bears have gone on to receive multiple design awards and take plenty of care in the production of their products. Please see the following production statement, taken from the official website:

“When deciding about materials and production, we place great emphasis on quality and safety. We firmly believe that only the best is good enough for children and collectors. Our products comply with EN71 and carry the CE mark. TÜV Thuringia carries out stringent tests, not only of our products, but also of our manufacturing processes. All our materials are sourced in the EU and all our products are still 100% made in Germany.”

Fans of Kosen Bears can visit the factory in Bad Kösen and go on a tour. You can even stay in their own hotel, The Mutiger Ritter, which is located across from the factory.

Playmobil comes to Toy Street!

When we think about childhood toys there are some brands which immediately come to mind – Lego, Play Doh, Mega Bloks and of course Playmobil. Since its launch in 1974, it’s become a household name across the globe, and soon we’re going to be stocking even more of it!

Playmobil History

Playmobil was developed by a German inventor named Hans Beck, often referred to as the “Father of Playmobil.” Beck was a cabinet maker but also enjoyed building model aeroplanes in his spare time, and as it happens this was how he landed a job at Geobra Brandstatter (the manufacturer of Playmobil).

Beck originally pitched a model aeroplane design and instead was asked to develop figures for children – this was when Playmobil figures were born. Since the first Playmobil figure was released there have been over three billion figures produced, and the small shiny toys are distributed all over the world in around 100 countries.

TV and Film

Now, unfortunately there has not yet been a Playmobil movie as big as The Lego Movie; although we do hear whispers of an ‘untitled’ film being released in 2019 (we’re thinking it’s probably going to have Playmobil in the title, how about you?) but that’s not to say the powerhouse company hasn’t dabbled in Hollywood.

They’ve brought out a Pirates collection, a How to Train Your Dragon collection and more recently (our personal favourite) a Ghostbusters collection. Playmobil have brought out a number of video games, a TV series called Super 4 and they also have short films available on their website.

Playmobil - Ghostbusters Stay Puft Marshmallow Man

Why is Playmobil still so popular?

As Playmobil has been around since the 70s, it’s likely you played with it when you were a kid and it’s likely your kids will play with it one day. But in a world filled with gadgets, gizmos and new tech being developed every day, why is it that Playmobil is still such a staple in children’s lives?

Playmobil has such a large range of products covering history, pirates, princesses, the list goes on and on! They even have a Tooth Fairy and an Ice Sculptor; their products cover different cultures, time periods and magical realms and the collection is always expanding.

The unique playing principle encourages children to use their minds, create situations with their imaginations and from real life and drift off into their own worlds of adventure. The figures themselves have moving arms and legs to help kids come up with all kinds of stories and games, which promotes creativity and helps them to develop empathy! The multi-talented cherub-faced figures really can do anything!

Toy Street’s Playmobil Collection

At present, we have a range of puzzles and we’re constantly adding to our collection of figures. We’ve detailed below our Top Five Playmobil products to chase away those January Blues…

Celebrate Paddington Bear’s 60th Anniversary

Exciting things are on the horizon at Toy Street, and one comes in the shape of a 60th Anniversary Paddington Bear by Steiff!

The new Steiff Paddington celebrates the 60th anniversary of the original book being published. Paddington is an anthropomorphic bear from darkest Peru. He is kindhearted, polite and well mannered, which is how – through Michael Bond’s books – he captured the hearts of children (and parents alike) over the years.

This bear is in contrast with the two recent live action hit movies. The films, starring Ben Whishaw, Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins (amongst other stars) focus on the story of Paddington in modern day life. The bear is still found and adopted by the Brown Family much like the original story, but he then comes up against a taxidermist whose desire is to kidnap him and add him to their collection.

A Bit of Paddington History

‘A Bear Called Paddington’ was first imagined in 1958 by the late Michael Bond, and featured the original Paddington without his trademark wellingtons. The bear was found at Paddington Railway Station in London, with a tag around his neck reading “Please look after this bear. Thank you.”

Bond has said that Paddington was based on a lonely teddy bear he noticed in a London store on Christmas Eve 1956, which he bought as a present for his wife. He was inspired by his memories of newsreels showing child evacuees leaving the capital in World War Two, with labels around their necks much like Paddington’s.

In 1972, the first Paddington Bear was brought to life by Gabrielle Designs. The company was run by Shirley and Eddie Clarkson, and the first prototype was made as a Christmas present for their children Joanna and Jeremy Clarkson (who is now well known for his TV presenting and writing, and made famous by Top Gear).

Gabrielle’s designs introduced Paddington in wellington boots, which the Clarkson’s used to help the bear stand up. Since then, there have been many different versions of the stuffed toy (with and without his wellies).

The Bear Itself

Steiff’s new bear pays homage to Peggy Fortnum, the first illustrator to draw Paddington Bear for Michael Bond’s children’s books. Fortnum was commissioned to create a Paddington in black and white line drawings in 1958, and she also went on to illustrate the next eight books. Her illustrations gave life to Paddington, and made the idea of a lost bear coming to London and being adopted by an ordinary family seem almost normal.

The stuffed toy features his signature red hat and blue raincoat and comes complete with a specially commissioned 60th anniversary logo.

This special, limited edition bear is now available to order at Toy Street!
