Dobble Review

Dobble is a game which blows my mind. It is simple in its play, but it is so incredibly clever. The game consists of 55 circular cards contained in a tin along with an instruction sheet that explains the five different games you can play with anywhere from two to eight players.

Each of the cards contains 8 different symbols on it. Random things like a cactus, a dolphin, a yin yang or a four leaf clover. The basis of the game is that between any two cards, there will be one pair of matching symbols, but only one. How crazy is that? There is just one pair of matching symbols between any two cards, the thought absolutely boggles my brain. The deck of cards are split among the players, leaving one card in the centre as the start card. The race is on to find that matching pair between your top card and that in the middle as quickly as possible to win that round and place your card on top.

This game is a true family game, you can play from any age from 4 or 5 up to 99 quite easily, and anyone could win. There have been times where Grandma has absolutely cleaned up on this game, and others where we have all been schooled by a five year old. Reactions and the ability to quickly spot matching symbols seems to be a skill that a person may only possess temporarily.

The tin contains a bunch of variations of the game. They are all pretty similar so easy to learn although you will probably find your house gets a favourite and plays that one over all the others. In our house we love the Waterfall one where you try to get rid of all your cards first into the middle. There is the opposite where you are trying to gain all the cards but for some reason I am terrible at this version and good at the first.

Dobble is a blast to play with anyone, it comes in a tin that is perfect for being thrown into a bag and being played at a cafe, at the park or on the move as well as at home.

Top 5 EUGY Animals

EUGY is a fantastic company with a mission to do better for our planet and its inhabitants. They provide eco-friendly toys that are great for creating, playing, and also displaying! EUGY Animals are made from an assortment of cardboard pieces that you put together yourself using magic glue. Each piece is numbered and the card sheet has a fun fact about your chosen animal on it, so you’ll learn a lot and also get an adorable new animal friend out of the experience.

There are so many EUGY animals to choose from – so where do you start? We’ve got a whole EUGY collection here on Toy Street, and today we’re going to show you our favourites!

Unicorn Sky

EUGY’s Unicorn Sky is the younger sibling of their pink counterpart. Featuring a pretty pastel blue mane with pink streaks, a rainbow horn, and lovely blue wings, Unicorn Sky’s special power is that she blends in with the bright blue sky. The EUGY unicorn models are delightfully bubbly, with rounded bodies and flowing cardboard hair.

Tiger

This delightfully adorable little Tiger figure is pouncing to be built. The round shapes give him a cute and friendly look, while still showing off his great big paws and claws! And of course, you can’t forget about the tail. If you choose to make the EUGY Tiger to spring into action, we’re certain he’ll be a very loyal friend.

Orca

It’s time for the king of the ocean! Orcas are one of the most intelligent marine predators, even outsmarting sharks. Sadly, orcas are facing a lot of trouble recently – and that’s where EUGY comes in. The EUGY orca is supporting Orca Research Trust, with a percentage of their online sales going to the trust.

Elephant

The EUGY Elephant brings all 7,500 kilograms of your favourite animal down into a lightweight package you can hold neatly in the palm of your hand. Complete with all the iconic features; tusks, trunk, and ears shaped like the continent they call home. If you’ve never stopped to appreciate how cute elephants can be, we think your new best friend – the EUGY Elephant – will change that!

Sea Otter

Just when we all thought sea otters couldn’t get any cuter, EUGY brings us this wonderful model. The sea otter lays on its back as it floats across the water, hugging a shellfish to its chest. This craft kit has lovely attention to detail, showing the texture of the water-resistant fur and making the otter’s shellfish companion optional. The sea otter is the perfect companion, whether its sitting on your desk, shelf, or in your toy box with the rest of your EUGY collection.

Top 5 Bluey Buys

If you have young children and a Disney+ subscription, then there’s a good chance that you are already well acquainted with the Bluey and Heeler family. This Australian cartoon has become a beloved family favourite and we’ve lined up some Bluey toy recommendations for younger children: from babies to around six years old.

Wackadoo Watch

This Wackadoo watch does SO much more than just telling the time! It’s a built-in clock, stopwatch and timer alarm. There’s also four fun games to choose from that include characters from the show such as Bluey, Bingo and her rabbit plush, Floppy. They’re nice and simple, such as using left and right buttons to avoid obstacles in ‘Wind Up Bingo’ and keeping a balloon afloat in ‘Keepy Uppy’. There’s also a game for matching pairs and a three egg ‘mix up’ game where you watch which egg Bingo hides Floppy in, and win by choosing the right egg. With wonderful links to episodes that will resonate with children that are fans of the show, this is a fun toy for ages 3-6 that also encourages interest in learning to tell the time.

Crayola: Bluey Color Wonder

Perfect for kids that love colouring but haven’t mastered the art of not drawing on the table or themselves yet! This set come with 18 colouring sheets and five ‘magic’ markers that appear clear, but create colour on the colouring sheets – yet remain clear on furniture, clothes, skin and other surfaces. With the promise of no mess or stains and a fun, eye-catching designs for kids to choose from, it’s a win for both parents and kids!

Bluey Family Cruiser

This fun 4WD is the Heeler family car from the show and makes a great playroom addition. It’s suitable for younger children or toddlers that have begun to enjoy pushing toys around, or older children that enjoy making up adventures as they play. The car comes with a Bandit figurine and 2 surfboards that clip into the roof rack. It’s compatible with all Bluey figurines, secured into the car with pegs in the seats to keep them in place as they rocket around the room! For added fun, there’s stickers so kids can decorate the car and really make it their own.

Bluey Campervan Playset

If your little ones have the Family Cruiser and you’re looking for a toy to help them take their imaginative play to the next level, then look no further than the Campervan playset! It attaches directly onto the Family Cruiser and brings hours more fun with a fold-out design that has two bunk beds, a ladder and a dining table. Like the Cruiser, it has pegs to secure figurines during play or while being towed along. This set also comes with a campfire and Jean Luc figurine from the brilliant ‘Camping’ episode for kids to recreate and invent their own Bluey outdoorsy fun.

Bluey Talking Plush

This plush is a perfect addition to the bedroom of any Bluey fan – from baby age onward. At around 13inches tall, it’s soft and snuggly and has wonderful details that keep it closely resembling cartoon Bluey. It also has a built-in speaker that, when pressed, plays nine of Bluey’s catch phrases as well as the catchy theme song from the show – perfect for playtime, or storytime! There’s also a plush of Bluey’s sister, Bingo, to double the fun.

These are just some of my favourites – check out the full selection of Bluey toys with a quick search in the ‘Search for products’ bar above.

BRIO’s World of Wooden Toys – Review

Now, what kind of blogger would I be if I just gave you my wooden toy recommendations without a handy top 5 list to guide you:

#1 Circle Train Set:

All aboard a new railway adventure with the Circle Train Set. A must-have for anyone new to the world of Brio railways, this set includes 8 wooden train tracks, a passenger train with carriage, two figures and other railway accessories. Engage your child in open-ended play as they pick up passengers, drive around the tracks, learn to stick to the stop and go signs, all before dropping everyone off at the station. Final stop: fun-filled play!
With realistic vehicles, it’s never been easier to deliver enjoyable play based on real-life events.

#2 Crane and Mountain Tunnel:

An easy way to elevate any train set – a good ol’ fashioned mountain tunnel. As the train drives through, four different sounds activate for complete sensory engagement. And if that wasn’t enough, you have the option to lift the crane and top of the mountain off and place it on the track for an alternative way to play. A great, functional addition to your train set, this is a must have!

Nontoxic and easy to clean, playtime can be rolled away just as easily as it started.

#4 Shuffleshot:

Looking to engage your child while having fun yourself? Why not take a shot at BRIO’s shuffleshot game? The objective of the game is for players to score the most points by shooting their discs the closest they can to the centre point of the board. When all discs are shot, the player with the most discs closest to the centre wins! Knock your opponent’s discs off the board or build your own barricades – fun can be had for all the family!

#5 Dachshund Pull Along:

All the fun of a pet with none of the mess? Sign me up! Add the retro Daschund Dog to your child’s playtime. When your child takes the wooden pull-along dog for a walk, it moves its head, ears, and even wags its tail. For a child who has just learnt to walk, this toy is perfect for practise during playtime, allowing them to engage in and get used to moving around their environment.

Final Thoughts:

Scratching the surface of the eco-friendly products ToyStreet has to offer, BRIO’s line of wooden toys creates a long-lasting, customisable world built for you and your child. This is the durable, imaginative play you’ve been looking for!

That’s Not A Hat Review

Do you want to get a game that you can play with literally anyone? What about a game that takes mere minutes to play a round, but you’ll play game after game after game? What if I told you that That’s Not A Hat was one of the cheapest games I had ever bought? What if I also said that I played it 52 times in less than two months?

Gameplay

That’s Not A Hat is very simple. You have a deck of cards that have very simple drawings on them. There is a skateboard, a duck, frog, record player, ruler, lamp. Simple line drawings that are quickly named. On the back of each card will be an arrow going either left or right. To start with everyone will get a card and they will turn it “picture side” up and we will go round the ring stating what our card depicts. Once you have gone round twice, all the cards are flipped over and will remain so for the whole game.

The top card of the deck is given as a gift by the first player. They will pass it face down following the direction of the arrow saying “That’s A …”. The player receiving the card can believe them and accept the gift, passing their own card along the arrow direction. If they decide to challenge the player then the card is flipped over and whoever was wrong takes the card face-up in front of them. If you have three cards in front of you, then you have lost the game. Whoever takes the card becomes the first player, they draw a new card from the deck, show everyone and pass this card on. Which is always problematic for me, because by then I likely still have no idea what that card is.

All is fine and dandy until you realise that your short term memory is abysmal and you can’t remember your own card from 2 seconds ago let alone what on Earth anyone else has. There is lots of suspicion as people try to confidently pass a cat off as a donut. The whole group will descend into utter hysterics as the cards move quicker ad you brains become more and more addled. This is a party game that anyone can play and I would wager that no one will get it right all the time.

Artwork And Components

This is a super basic game, but it has a bright pink box with a simple and sleek graphic design that appeals to my eyes. It is a cheap game, but it does not give off the aura of cheap. Instead these are thick premium stock cards with clean graphics and bright colours. The box is small and perfectly contains the stack of cards whilst not being so small that it gets lost on a shelf. This is a perfect size to chuck into your bag or pocket for when the need arises, and let me tell you that thai game will be well received with any group.

Round Up

If you are looking for game that offers huge value and is suitable for all the family then I truly believe that you cannot go wrong with That’s Not a Hat. This game is simple, and quite frankly has absolutely no business being as fun as it is! But here we are!

Scholars Of The South Tigris Review

Scholars of the South Tigris is the second in the South Tigris series. The first being Wayfarers and the last will be Inventors (at time of writing not yet released). This is a game all about dice. Their manipulation and use as workers to try and bump yourself up tracks and generally gain a lot of victory points. This is set during the height of the Abbasid Caliphate (830AD), a time when the keenest minds were called upon to acquire and translate scientific manuscripts from all over the world. In this game, you will be trying to be the player with the most victory points by translating scrolls, increasing knowledge in the various scientific arenas and influencing the three guilds.

Gameplay

This is a pretty meaty game in terms of strategy. It is “heavy”, and so it is likely to appeal mostly to those that are really heavily into board games. This is a typical Euro game in that you are trying your best to manage your resources and get the best you possibly can out of each turn, trying to produce resources and manage these to eventually turn them into points.

Scholars of the South Tigris centres around the translation of scrolls into Arabic from a selection of other languages; Persian, Greek, Syriac, Chinese, Hebrew and Sanskrit. In order to translate a scroll, you must pay translators on the board in gold. If you use your own translators then no further payment is required, but you will pay a silver coin to use neutral or opponent translators. This will often be necessary as scrolls are your scoring objective cards and collecting a lot of these will pay handsomely in victory points in final scoring.

The other thing that you will want to be doing is bumping up tracks. You need to climb the coloured tracks not only for points, but for in game benefits each time you rest as well. The higher you can climb up the tracks the sweeter the rewards.

Artwork And Components

Generally, all of Garphill Games products have great artwork and this is no different. The illustration is done by The Mico (Mihajlo Dimtrievski) and features a broad selection of different ethnicities and genders within the translator cards.

Despite being quite beige heavy in theme, this whole game is about colours and the graphic design really pops. The dice are brightly coloured and the primary dice are opaque unlike the translucent secondary coloured dice which I found visually very quick to distinguish from one another.

These games tend to be quite heavy in iconography, and this one is especially heavy. There is an iconography glossary on the back of the rule book that it is probably useful to keep out on the table whilst you play.

Round Up

If you are looking for a heavy game to join your collection and have enjoyed any of Garphill Games’ previous works then in my humble opinion this is a no-brainer. I think it is absolutely fantastic. If you have yet to try a Garphill Games game, then I still think this could be for you if you commit the time to getting your head around the icons then it should be a pretty quick learn. I watched a playthrough first and can really recommend this as a way to learn faster.

Washington Z.C Zombicide Review

The Whitehouse has fallen, Washington is compromised and the President, the most powerful person in the free world is in grave danger as the hordes are coming. Protecting the President is one major challenge (or problem) of the Washington Z.C set for the survivors to have to cope with. It’s important to note you will need a copy of Zombicide 2nd edition in order to be able to use the Washington Z.C set. So, what does Washington Z.C bring to the game?

New Survivors

It is always pleasing to get a set of new survivor characters to add to the game. Within this set you have a secret service squad, each with a suite of unique skills as options to use in the missions. Some new skills are specific to Washington Z.C, I’ll come back to those but they are very much linked with the “all out” rules. The beauty of Zombicide is all survivors are interchangeable. It is about finding a balanced group to try and get through the scenario.

POTUS

The President is one stand out miniature within the set as well as a character called Taylor. Strange that there is nothing in the ruleset about what these characters mean or do.

Their involvement is within the campaign missions and that is later defined. You will simply have to play to find out what that means.

New Kit And Kit Rules

I like what has been added here. You have a new standard kit deck, a new pimp weapon kit deck, and (most excitingly) an all new secret service weapon deck. There’s a lot of options here. Having run through some of the missions this kit is pretty fundamental for survival.

The reason for the all new decks is the new “all out” rule. If anything, the gambling rule. Every weapon card, as we know, has a set amount of dice to roll when using it, ranged or melee, they all have this. There is now a little red number to the top right of the base number which is your all-out option. The set comes with 6 more all out dice. Unique dice that instead of a 1, have a break symbol printed on. If you choose all out with your weapon you roll your normal allotted base dice plus the all-out number of dice with these new unique dice. So, a Katana has 2 standard dice and 2 more all out dice as an example (A secret service agent with a Katana is irregular, but just roll with it). You therefore have a chance to take a lot more zombies in a single action. But, and it is a big BUT and a gamble. On the all-out dice only, if just a single break symbol appears, that weapon is broken and discarded instantly. I don’t need to point out how than can quickly cause the survivor team problems.

Circling back as well. Some of the survivors within here do have skills that allow the all-out option to be further enhanced. Extra all out dice, increased damage with the all out, all making that gamble even more appealing.

After Sunset

As if battling the hordes wasn’t challenging enough, now you cannot see them! You are playing at night.

There is an upgraded first player counter which is a 24hour clock. Simply 12 hours of day time and 12 hours of night time. Each turn is an hour of play on the clock. Night time results in range being dropped to a maximum of 1 and you only hit on 6’s, regardless of what that weapon may normally do. Melee combat rules unchanged (thank goodness). There is more to it than this, but this day/night feature adds a huge level of drama to the game. Primarily due to giving the survivors additional challenges to overcome.

The Washington Z.C Campaign

A 10-mission campaign lies in the back of the rule book. With the opportunity to gain experience, to pick up additional skills or actions to carry forward as well as the possibility of carrying kit through into the next mission, instead of starting over with the basics. Of course, it might break between missions and you have to go again.

These missions are not so typical of Zombicide. I have found in the standard missions, I can look at the board from the off and plan a route through, it doesn’t always work out but you can see a path to the end. Not here in Washington Z.C! Instead of objective tokens there are objective cards and notes. You spend an action still to collect, however you then read the narrative printed on the underside of the card and this leads to rule and objective changes which you cannot possibly see coming at the start of the mission.

I loved this feature because I was debating when should I actually turn the next objective over and should I even do it at all. It is proper jeopardy if you cannot see what is coming.

Your survivors don’t necessarily die out right in the game either. You have 1 turn after a survivor is eaten to get back to them and spend an action to recover them. If you can do this, then place the mini back on the survivor dashboard and you will have them available for the next campaign mission, assuming the remaining survivors can get you there. If you cannot save them they are dead. All experience gained is lost, but you can replace them with another survivor to top your team back up to 6 survivors.

There are a few other little rule elements for consideration but these are your significant updates to the game.

Final Thoughts

Washington Z.C is an awesome expansion and I’m thrilled to have picked it up for the depth added. Instead of single plays there is carry over between the games. It has that “walking dead” series feel now and I love it. You get attached to your survivors on the way which only intensifies the further along you go.

You can also bring all these rules in to your other missions. All out can be included; the day and night rules can be included which will change the dynamic of those missions giving an added level of replay ability to those missions.

If you are looking to freshen up your Zombicide play or increase the challenge I highly recommend picking up this expansion.
