Merry Christmas from Toy Street!

Christmas is on our doorstep and we want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! Whether you’re having a big family get together or a small, intimate affair, we hope you have the best toy-filled time this festive season. Christmas is traditionally all about: Family, food and gift giving… which means: TOYS, TOYS, TOYS! What’s better than a child’s face on Christmas morning when the bear they’ve wanted all year is under the tree with a big red bow on it?

Have you got some last minute shopping to do? We can help! We’ve got all sorts of presents: big, small, cuddly and mean – we’re sure we’ve got something to suit your needs. We will give you a quick run through of the stocking fillers and gifts we love this year.

Stocking Fillers

Stuck for stocking fillers? Why don’t you throw in a pair of hilariously themed socks. We know socks are a bit of cliche at Christmas time – you always get the dads and Grandads saying ‘you better not just get me socks again this year’ – but you really can’t go wrong with our range.

Maybe you want some animal themed socks… perhaps you would love to see Grandma is some jazzy pink leopard socks or maybe the crazy Uncle fancies being a giraffe for the day? If not, go for a more classic theme – Christmas! Who’s the Christmas Pudding in the family? Is there a cousin who has had one too many sprouts and is trumping more than a reindeer?

Christmas Gifts

Our top picks for Christmas this year would have to be the Steiff bears. They are just adorable! We even have limited edition bears and some Christmas cuties. The high quality teddy bears are the perfect companion for the youngsters and for the collectors among the family. Ranging from small, delicate bears to the bigger, fluffy bears – we really do have a bear for everyone.

So other than presents, family, food, someone falling asleep after the meal… what else is a pinnacle of Christmas time? GAMES! Whats a Christmas without one family member throwing a tantrum because someone is cheating or they’re not winning?

Some games that we love, and we know you will too are Uno and Dobble. Both card-based games are absolutely perfect for the whole family. There are quite a few different versions of Dobble including: Kids, Finding Dory and Star Wars! This unique game is quick, easy to pick up and really affordable at Toy Street! Shop for yours now.

I’m sure, like us, you like to play practical jokes at Christmas. At what other point in the year will you have all the people who you love the most around you… to make fun of!? We’ve got just the things to make your siblings go as red as Santa.

A fart whistle could be the perfect companion for you this year. Who said it was just reindeer that smell! Want to move on from your sibling and poke fun at Granddad? Imitate the head of the family with these stick on mustaches! Now, lets not mess around anymore. Why’re we missing out the classic, most effective practical joke… the whoopee cushion!

Whatever type of Christmas you’ve got planned, be sure to let Toy Street be a part of it.

The company now has over 500 different products and 20 different ranges, some of which you can now find on the Toy Street website. You instantly know that you’re looking at a Keel Toys item because of the iconic red badge that can be found on their teddies.

Let’s take a look at the range of Keel Toys products available at My Bear Shop.

Animotsu

The Animotsu range features 30 of the cutest and most colourful soft toys you will ever see! Sitting at 15cm, each animal has been given a unique makeover by the designers over at Keel Toys. The only feature that remains the same through the series is the huge, sparkly eyes that will instantly grab your attention.

Some of our favourites include the adorable grey and white husky, who comes with sparkly blue eyes. Next up we have the Rainbow Cat! This little kitten is a multi-coloured soft toys, with different shades of red, pink, blue and yellow. The rainbow cat also comes with sparkly gold eyes.

Suki Bears – A Closer Look

Here at Toy Street, we have a fantastic range of products from Suki Bears.

The company which was previously part of Russ Berrie Ltd, was launched in 1979 by Christopher Robinson. Later in 2011, the company was renamed Suki Gifts International Ltd. Suki Gifts provide a wide range or products from wine glasses to pop up 3D cards as well as having an amazing collection of cuddly creatures!

The Suki Range

Every six months Suki release their ‘Silver Tag Bears’ collection. Each one of the collections has six bears, however only 1500 of each bear within the collection is produced and sold – this is what makes these Suki bears so collectable.

All of the Silver Tag bears are made of a soft, luxurious material that makes the bears look extremely realistic. All Silver Tag bears have a white label attached to their left paw pad which has a brown ‘S’ inscribed in it. This is how the Silver Tag Bears are distinguished.

Suki have many other ranges of bears as well, so you are sure to find the perfect companion! Their Fun Li’L Peepers make lovely gifts for younger kids, with their calm appearance and soft texture. Whilst the Bears from the Past collection are adorably vintage; guaranteed to give you flash backs of fond memories.

Blue bear is in the Hug-a-Boo collection, which holds many teddies perfect for the smallest of bear collectors. This teddy has the softest blue, plush fur and is holding an even softer blanket; squeeze blue bear and you’ll be played “Brahms lullaby.” Blue bear makes a perfect newborn gift and there is also a pink version available. The Hug-a-Boo collection also has a Blue bear with a rattle, ideal for babies that like to make that bit more noise! All the Hug-a-Boos are classically cute and would fare brilliantly with anybodies collection.

Yomiko Petz is the sweetest collection you will find. All the teddies are like real pets; including Beagles, Labradors and Dachshunds – name your pet and I bet they made a teddy of it! The Poodle is inexplicably life-like and it would be hard to resist playing fetch with this pup; with downy ears and a dabbled muzzle the resemblance is shocking. If you’re a dog lover as I am, you wont be able to look at this teddy and not want one for yourself.

Our personal favourite of all being the classical cuddly toy Wolf, this teddy is a show stopper and has meticulous details. Wolf has such big eyes that the traditional Teddy Bear characteristics are not lost with the more modern designs, which is always a bonus!

Here are some of our Suki favourites:

  • Emelye loves Millie The Cat because she is soft and cuddly and is a great companion for all babies.
  • Liv has a soft spot for The Wolf because it looks majestic and simply adorable.
  • Joe has chosen The White Tiger because they’re his favourite animal and the Suki take on this outstanding creature does not disappoint.
  • Sarah has chosen The Labrador because it looks exactly like her dog, Albie.
  • Olivia has gone with Pablo the Blue Donkey with Baby as her favourite because he has cute eyes that she just can’t resist.

You’ve seen our favourites, now it’s time to find your own by heading over to Suki area of Toy Street.

Merrythought Bears – A Closer Look

A year later, the first catalogue was produced by Florence Attwood. This book contained 32 toys, including the very first Merrythought Bear – named Magnet! The big names soon came calling, with Harrods, Hamleys and Selfridges all stocking Merrythought products.

In 1937, the first pandas were created by the company – just a year or two after the western world had been told about their existence.

Post War

During the war, the British Admiralty move into Merrythought’s Coalbrookdale factory to commence vital map-making work. At the government’s request, the workers at Merrythought began producing textile items such as helmet linings and gas mask bags for the war. The company would start making bears once again in 1946, despite limited supplies.

In 1949, the world was introduced to the now iconic Punkinhead (Punkie Bear), one of the last to be designed by Florence Attwood. A year later, Holmes’ son Bernard joined the company and he began to shape the future of the brand. The company now produced animals, dolls and gollys alongside the teddy bear.

In 1956, Merrythought Bears purchased the factory they worked in from The Coalbrookdale Company. An automatic stuffing machine was bought from America to help keep up with the increasing production numbers.

Two years later the company broke into European markets, appearing at the Nuremberg trade show. Shortly after, Merrythought Bears were exporting to colonial nations such as New Zealand and Australia.

The licensed 60’s

During the 60’s and 70’s, Merrythought began producing wide range of licensed products, based on some of the famous characters from the time. Examples included:

  • Sooty.
  • Yogi Bear.
  • Winnie the Pooh.
  • Donald Duck.
  • Mickey Mouse.
  • Pluto
  • Bambi.

This was shortly followed by an expansion into hobby horses, rocking horses and push-along toys such as Pablo the Donkey and Nellie Elephant.

The Collectors 90’s

Merrythought Bears celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in 1990 by releasing its first International Collectible Bear. Demand rocketed, leading to the company releasing a separate collectors catalogue alongside the traditional copy.

In 1992 the company won the prestigious Teddy Bear of the Year award with the Master Mischief bear. Three years later, Oliver Holmes founded the Merrythought International Collector’s Club and opened the factory to the world for the first time.

Recent Times

In 2010, a series of 80th birthday bears were produced to help celebrate Merrythought Bears’ birthday. The following year marked the passing of Oliver, who died aged just 60 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

The company was passed down to his three daughters, with Sarah and Hannah Holmes taking over the management side of things.

In 2012, Merrythought Bears were asked to become a licensee for the London Olympic Games and produced the official teddy bear for the historic event, alongside the Paralympic Games and for Team GB.

A year later, a special teddy bear was produced to celebrate the birth of Prince George of Cambridge. Last year, another royal special edition was produced, this time for the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations.

The unique teddy bear was made from the most opulent mohair in a rich buttermilk shade, with a commemorative royal cypher embroidered onto the left paw. The teddy bear wore an overcoat and matching hat to symbolise the Queen’s style.

You can find out even more about the history of Merrythought Bears on their interactive timeline.

Some of our favourites

There are so many amazing teddies to choose from when we look through the Merrythought Bears collection. One of our favourites is Digby the dog! Digby is carefully crafted from sandy-gold and special multi-tonal grey mohair, and features endearing lop-sided ears; one pricked upwards and the other folded.

The fine detail of his design includes hand embroidered claws, nose and smile, along with an adorable little turned-up puppy tail.

Another favourite of ours is the Henley Teddy Bear. A short-trimmed muzzle highlights the beaming smile on this simply adorable teddy bear. Henley comes with an opulent burgundy bow and his friendly personality ensures that he really is a bear to fall in love with.

So go ahead, delve into Toy Street and wonder at the pieces that await. Bears that will complement your collection, bears that you will long to take home and love to love. With our extensive range of luxurious bears and animals, you will find yourself coming back time and again and loving your experience every time.

Steiff Bears – A closer look

Here at My Bear Shop, we are very excited to announce our partnership with Steiff Bears. Founded in 1880, by Margarete Steiff, Steiff bears are well known within the collector’s community. They have even been described as the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of bears. A German company, Steiff bears are defined by their ‘button in ear’ trademark, a sign of quality and authenticity.

There are three types of ‘button in ear’:

  • The yellow tag – Found on all unlimited Steiff animals and bears.
  • The white tag with red writing – This defines limited edition bears in the Steiff collection.
  • The white tag with black writing – This tag depicts bears that have been modelled on replicas from the Steiff archives.

Steiff Bears – The Early Days

The Steiff Bear company was founded in 1880 by Margarete Steiff. At first the company created elephants, sold as pincushions to Margarete’s friends. Seeing that children were playing with the elephants, Margarete decided to design other animals such as dogs and cats. At the time, she designed and made most of the prototypes herself.

In 1902, Steiff released ‘Bear 55 PB’ – the world’s first bear with jointed limbs. During the production of this bear Margarete’s nephew, Richard Steiff, also found mohair plush that is used on the majority of Steiff bears today.

It was in 1903, at the Leipzig Toy Fair, that Steiff’s breakthrough came. An American businessman came across Bear 55 PB and placed an order for 3000 of them. The bear went on to be sold in the USA under the name ‘Teddy bear’ after US President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt.

By 1907, Steiff had manufactured 974,000 teddy bears and haven’t looked back since. The famous “button in ear” was the idea of Margarete’s other nephew, Franz, in 1904 to help keep counterfeits from being passed off as the real deal.

The button originally contained a symbol of an elephant, but this has since been replaced by the name Steiff.

Other important moments in the early history of Steiff Bears include:

  • 1892 – The first illustrated Steiff catalogue was released.
  • 1893 – The toy factory was entered in the trade register as “Margarete Steiff, Felt Toy Factor Giengen/Brenz.”
  • 1907 – 400 employees and 1800 home workers produced 973,999 teddy bears and a total of 1,700,000 toys.
  • 1909 – Margarete Steiff passed away, leaving the company in the hands of her nephews.
  • 1910 – Steiff won the Gran Prix at the world exhibition in Brussels.
  • 1927 – 1932 – The plush dog Molly sold over 500,000 units.

Post-War Restart

Following the end of World War Two, the company was restarted in 1947 with just under 1000 employees. This number had doubled by 1952, mainly due to the success of Mecki the mascot of a television newspaper and a figure from the puppet feature film by the Diehl brothers.

A stuffed puppet version of this popular character was manufactured by the company from 1951,

The 80’s and Beyond

Steiff Bears celebrated their 100th anniversary at the beginning of the 80’s by opening the Margarete Steiff museum in Giengen –  a forerunner of today’s experience museum: The World of Steiff. Alongside this, Steiff also began to produce limited edition animal replicas.

Fast forward to the beginning of the 90’s, the Steiff Club was officially opened for lovers and collectors of their animals. The club featured exclusive club advantages as well as special club editions of teddy bears.

A few years later, in 1997, the first Steiff Gallery was opening in Hamburg – on the anniversary of Margarete Steiff’s 150th birthday. During the next three years, galleries would open in Cologne, Munich and Dusseldorf.

It wasn’t until 2004 that the United Kingdom had its own gallery, which opened in Bromley, London.

Some of our favourites

Over the past 125 years, Steiff has produced over 20,000 different animals, some of which we are lucky enough to supply through My Bear Shop. A personal favourite of mine is the Studio Elephant. He’s a great addition to any household, with soft plush fur and safety eyes – Benny is a great introduction to the world of Steiff animals for any little one. Or perhaps, if like myself, you’re an avid elephant lover, it’s near impossible to turn away from this little guy.

If you favour the more traditional bear, we have a wide variety of choices such as the Bellamy Bear. Made using the finest, wavy mohair, the Bellamy embodies Steiff perfectly with his dignified expression and of course, the classic ‘button in ear’.

Alternatively, if you like your bears to embody a little bit of history, the Classic 1920 bear may well be for you. From the classic bear range, the 1920 bear is loved among collectors. With two tone eyes and a growler, the beautiful features don’t stop there. The 1920 bear has wavy, brass coloured mohair fur and a hand embroidered nose and mouth. The 1920 bear is just crying out for a loving home.

So go ahead, delve into Toy Street and wonder at the pieces that await. Bears that will complement your collection, bears that you will long to take home and love to love. With our extensive range of luxurious bears and animals, you will find yourself coming back time and again and loving your experience every time.

Freddy Fox is the cheekiest teddy on the market and his pink satin bow absolutely perfects this look. He would be the perfect feature to any mantelpiece.

We asked our Toy Street team which their favourite are…

I’m a sucker for a Kaycee dragon. Every single one is just so amazingly crafted. I think my favourites are Turbo and Pumpkin Pickle – who I’m pretty sure isn’t even a dragon. They look so innocent and like butter wouldn’t melt. I’ve already got Turbo and will be adding Pumpkin into the mix ASAP – Olivia.

My favourite bears are the Steiff Happy friends range. They are the perfect gift for the little people in my life, with such a great range of different animals or characters. They are the perfect gift, beautifully made high quality plush bear but still something the little ones can snuggle up to in bed and be part of their little adventures – Sarah.

Find-The-Toy-Here-Orange

I have been a collector of bears for over 20 years now. I love all my bears/dragons in my collection. When I enter a teddy bear shop, the question you may ask is “how do I decide which bear may I decide to buy?” Well it all comes down to the face, the way it looks at me, the look on its face asking me to take them home! Sometimes I find one, but not always, sometimes I come out empty handed – to my husband’s delight… and his wallet! Overall, I love all my bears dearly. If I had to choose my favourite bear, well dragon actually, it is Odin, a Kaycee dragon. He definitely wins my heart – Treena.

Digby Dog
made by Merrythought is sooooo cute! His hand embroidered claws, nose and smile all add to his charm and character – as do his lop-sided ears – a common feature among all my dogs at home! I’ve just started collecting bears, and I think Digby will be a great addition to my bear shelf – Rebecca.
