Just One Review

One, Singular Sensation

Just One is a collaborative party game that has been exploding in popularity since its release in 2018. It is a game that is both painfully simple yet completely engaging, making it an excellent choice for groups of all ages and skill levels.

The objective of the game is for players to guess a word, but with a unique twist – the players must work together to provide clues for the guesser, but with the sneaky little caveat that any duplicate clues will be canceled out. The game comes with a deck of cards, each with five different words printed on them. The guesser randomly chooses a card, and then one of the five words. Everyone else then writes a clue down on their dry-erase board. Once everyone has written down their word, then share with each other, erasing any duplicates. Players then take turns revealing their clues to the guesser. There are certain types of words that you cannot use but options are otherwise endless.

Tea for Two

The mechanisms are simple and easy to understand, making it accessible for everyone. However, the game still provides a challenge as players must think creatively to come up with unique and effective clues. Do you go for the obvious answer hoping that everyone else chooses to go obscure or do you think outside the box.

One of the best things about Just One is how versatile it is. It can be played with as few as three players, but it can also accommodate larger groups with ease. In fact, the more players there are, the more challenging and fun the game becomes. And although the box only provides white boards and pens for up to seven, you can go much larger with just some paper and pens.

The components of the game are good quality too, with sturdy dry-erase boards and markers included. The cards are also durable and have a good variety of words to choose from, with different difficulty levels. The fact that the game uses dry-erase boards means that players don’t have to worry about using up paper or keeping track of score sheets. The boards can be wiped clean and used again and again, making it much more environmentally friendly. That said, if you play the game a lot then be prepared to invest in more dry erase pens, which are cheap enough from most online shops.

Three Steps to Heaven

The great thing about Just One is just how easy it is to learn. The rules are straightforward and can be explained in just a few minutes. This makes it a great game to play with people who are not familiar with board games or who may be intimidated by more complex rules. It really allows gameplay across multiple generations.

One downside is that it may become repetitive after multiple plays, as there are a limited number of cards included. However, the game can be easily modified by simply creating your own.

Overall, Just One is an excellent party game that is easy to learn, promotes collaboration and creativity, and is sure to provide hours of entertainment for groups of all ages. It’s simple mechanics and emphasis on teamwork make it a great choice for families, friends, and any group event you can imagine.

If you’re looking for a fun and engaging game that will bring people together and keep them entertained, then this one is definitely worth checking out.

The Mind Review

The Mind is a co-operative game where players will work together to place cards in ascending order from their hands. The issue is that the players cannot speak to each other. You cannot say well I have the 80 card, you can wiggle your eyebrows and perhaps give cryptic clues such as, I believe that there is no chance I am the next card to go down, but ultimately it comes down to the art of mind reading. Sounds bizarre, but honestly you will be surprised by how much fun can be had with a few games of The Mind.

How Do You Play The Mind?

Setup of this game is simple, make a stack of throwing stars, extra life cards and the level cards. The amounts of these will be shown in the instruction manual, and changes based on player count. Then shuffle together all the number cards and deal out one to each player (for level 1). When you are ready, you look at your card and then the mind reading commences.

Without giving away information about your card number you must try to work out who has the lowest number and they should place this down, of course if you have a 3 then you are likely to be first, but perhaps someone else has the 2? If you have a 17, you could well be first, but you don’t want to seem too eager as there are 16 cards lower than yours that your fellow players could have been dealt. If you manage to get the cards all out in ascending order then you have completed the round, you receive the bonus on the level card and deal out the next round, for level 2, each player gets 2 cards and so on.

Who Will Enjoy The Mind?

We are always on the hunt for cool games that we can take with us traveling or to restaurants/bars/cafes to play. The Mind is a great one for this as the package is so small, and the amount of room needed to play is tiny. This can easily be played on even the smallest of pub tables.

This is a game that is suitable for people who have never picked up a game before, which also means you can teach anyone quickly regardless of the amount of attention they are paying (or the amount of beers they have imbibed in the sunshine of a beer garden that day). The game is also made up of a different number of rounds depending on the player count which means it will never go on too long. Even though the vast majority of the games that we have played have resulted in losing, we have always had a blast playing the game. There has never been a situation where we have felt like the game has dragged or that it has not been fun, in fact most times after a loss, we have been eager to give it another bash and try to do better.

If you are looking for a gift for a friend of something to take away on holiday with you then why not take a punt on the experience that is The Mind. You may find that you forge new connections with your fellow players as you read their mind.

Farm & Furious Review

Move over Vin Diesel. There’s a new risky racer around in Farm & Furious by LOKI KIDS and Coiledspring games!

Farm & Furious is a great small box game that combines a little luck, strategy, action retrieval, and a good old fashioned race! It has farmyard creatures vying to be the first to get to the barn. Ducks, roosters, dogs, bunnies, and chicks are in it to win it! Whoever reaches the finish line gets the trophy and the glory of being the finest farmyard racer there ever was!

Set Up

Place the starting line card and racetrack cards on the table and put the game box at the end so that everybody can see inside (as this acts as the finish line). The racetrack cards are double sided (blue flags for easier and orange for a more challenging race). Then give each player a deck of creature cards and a matching veggie baton token which goes on the starting line. And that’s it!

Playtime

Turns in Farm & Furious are simultaneous. So after somebody shouts “3,2,1, go”, everybody reveals a card from their hand. Each card has a different ability when it comes to moving the veggie baton closer to the finish line:

Ducks: your baton moves one spot along the race for every duckling played this round

Chicks: your baton moves 3 spaces but only if no player laid a Dog card this round,

Bunnies: your baton moves 4 spaces but only if no player laid and Dog card and only you laid a Bunny this round

Dog: this card cancels the effects of any Chicks and Bunnies laid this round and your baton moves the same number of spaces as cards cancelled.

Whistle: you can collect all previously played cards back into your hand (but your baton doesn’t move)- known as “action retrieval”

(Rooster: If being used this game, you repeat the effect of your last played card).

When the first player crosses the line, they win!

If you play with the orange flag racetrack cards:

Muddy Puddles: these force you to “stick” on that spot for one turn – even if you could have moved more spaces otherwise)

Doghouse: once you land on or pass this space, you have to discard your Dog card for the rest of the game

Straw Bale: You have to have enough moves to leap over the bale – you cannot land on it. If you do, you move back one space!

Wacky Races

This is such a fun small box game. Managing your hand and deciding which card to play each round is a big think for little gamers. And gambling against what other players might or might not do is a really fun rollercoaster ride. There’s even a solo mode where you shuffle and play a card from another deck each round and apply the effects as normal – probably the simplest but most effective AI I have seen in a game in a while!

And player interaction is high throughout. Almost every card offers you an immediate ability to benefit (or take a hit!) from what other players lay down. With only 6 cards in your hand (5 without the Rooster variant), the choices aren’t overwhelming, but you need to play smart.

Memory also comes into it. Knowing which cards each player has left helps narrow down what they might be playing this round. Unless they have only one card left, there’s still a gamble. But the potential effects are narrowed down. And if you only have a Bunny or a Chick and there are still some Dogs loose, then your baton is going to be on pause or even passed! Of course, having the chance to blow your Whistle means that you can regroup your racers and get all options back into your hand. However, that could open up the lead as you won’t be gaining or stopping any other baton progress that round!

Final Thoughts

Farm & Furious is a lovely quick family game for 1-5 players. Being able to shorten the race by using fewer racetrack cards is great for youngest gamers or when time is tight. But having the added restrictions on the orange flag sides likewise really helps to keep older gamers engaged in the race. Of course more experienced players are going to be better at planning moves. But this is a game aimed at 7+ years, and I think it does an excellent job of introducing our next generation to action retrieval, push your luck, and hand management in a colourful, fun way!

If you’re looking for a fun, colourful, budget friendly card game for young gamers then I would definitely recommend Farm & Furious. And if you like this one, Loki Kids have another two new games in their small box range to check out Hāpy Families and Tentacolor.

Hapy Families Review

Hapy Families by Loki Kids and Coiledspring Games is a fun twist on the familiar “have you got an X?” game play. The main objective hasn’t changed. You are still trying to collect sets (“families”) of characters that match. Here, the families are adorable looking little Egyptian Gods that are linked by colour and species type.

But this time all the cards are arranged in an alternating face up/face down pyramid. The rules are simple. On, on your turn, you pick a card from the pyramid. If it’s face up, everybody knows what you’re starting to collect. If it’s face down, however, it goes into your hand and remains a secret within your growing collection. You may also ask another player for a specific card (so long as it hasn’t been requested on the previous turn), but you don’t have to. And if you form a set of 3 cards on your go then you must lay them down in front of you.

The winner is the first player to lay down one complete family of 6 matching cards or 5/4/3 sets of 3 matching cards in a 2/3/4 player game.

Sandy Secrets

Hāpy Families hasn’t changed the traditional play of Happy Families so much that it feels like a completely different game. But the addition of a pyramid containing a mixture of face up and face down cards brings a fun new dynamic to the familiar race. Knowing what cards others are picking up is also a good way to introduce younger gamers to set collection and encourages us oldies to perhaps mess with each other a little!

Final Thoughts

The illustrations on the cards are absolutely lovely. And even the card backs are wonderfully detailed. Given that the cards are laid out in a pyramid, the tie in with the Egyptian theme is obviously there. Even the inside of the box hasn’t been forgotten.

This is a sweet, portable, little game that can easily be played in under 10 minutes. The rules are simple and set up is done as soon as the cards are laid out. Although the pyramid takes up a little more table space that the usual single deck, it’s worth finding a flat surface to see all those lovely card fronts and illustrated backs! Age wise, it feels right. Children as young as 5+ should be able to get to grips with the basic concepts, and the box should keep the cards safe when it disappears into their game collection!

If you’re looking for a fun, colourful, budget friendly card game for young gamers then I would definitely recommend Hapy Families. And if you like this one, Loki Kids have another two new games in their small box range to check out; Tentacolor and Farm & Furious.

Rhino Hero Super Battle Review

Who’s your favourite super-hero? For me, it’s got to be Rhino Hero! This plucky little caped crusader is back and this time he’s going up against his friends!

If you haven’t played the OG Rhino Hero, it’s basically a tower building game based on the age-old house-of-cards mechanism. Using floor cards and wall cards, the idea is to go up, up, up as high as you can. You place a wall card and then try to balance one of your own floor cards on top. And the floor card you place shows where the next player must place their own wall card on their turn (as well as a few bonus actions on some!). Rhino Hero hops up the levels surprisingly sprightly for a, well, rhino! There’s only one tower and the winner is the builder who places all their roof cards first. Although, if any player razes the building to the ground, whoever has the fewest roof cards left at that point wins!

Supercharged!

In Super Battle, the underling tower building mechanism remains the foundation. Still adding wall cards and still placing floors that go up, up, up! You also still get three floors each (and the rest forms the 3 card pool and the draw plie). But this time, the walls are either tall or short, and you get your own character (Big.E, Giraffe Boy, Batguin, and of course Rhino Hero). Oh and there are some crazy spider-monkeys hanging about the place just waiting to cause havoc. If you place a floor that shows one of those cheeky chaps, you’ve also got to balance one by it’s only-slightly-curvy-tail!

Now, when the floor looks like it is going to stay standing, the player rolls a die which dictates which floor they are going to. And when a character reaches the same story as another character, a battle commences! The arriving player is the “attacker” and the existing character must defend their position. Each player rolls a die and the highest number wins. The loser has to drop down to the levels below. But if it meets another player then another battle ensues! Oh and if the tower topples, whoever was highest at the time wins!

Final thoughts

This is a great family, dexterity game. HABA are a good bet when it comes to enjoyment, quality, and engaging kids in play that bigger kids also find fun.

It’s got a few more elements to it than the streamlined, elegantly simple original which is great for slightly older children. The battles are silly and harmless, but they are entirely luck based. Players have no agency over whether they go up or down (same as when placing characters after adding floors). And by that I mean there’s no strategy to keeping yourself in the lead. It all turns on the roll of a die. But that could also be a good thing because it means nobody gets “the blame” for sending their opponent’s character down the tower. Feelings can’t get hurt when ”the dice did it!”.

It’s interesting that the Attacker die is slightly weighted in that player’s favour, but they’re both still unpredictable when it comes to the results!

After multiple plays, our cards are still robust – the creases and edges aren’t overly fluffed or worn. Plus, thanks to a gigantic box, we can fit our original copy into the Super Battle box for space saving.

We really enjoy both the OG and this new supercharged version. In fact, I don’t think we have had a situation where anybody we have played it with hasn’t enjoyed Super Battling! Even after the kiddos go to bed, we have started a game with just us big kids, and the results have been hilarious!

Personally, I think our son is in it for the fall. He loves building up the tower as high as possible only to then “accidentally” cause it to tumble like, yep, you guessed it, a house of cards! But that’s cool with me because ultimately this game is all about having fun together!

Llamas In Pyjamas Review

We love pyjamas and we love games. And when our son was 4 years old, he fell in love with a llama when we went on a trip to the zoo. So when we saw Llamas in Pyjamas from Orchard Toys it was an instant buy from us.

Orchard Toys make a great collection of games for younger players which help reinforce kids’ learning in ways that are engaging, colourful, and fun. Llamas in Pyjamas is another fine example from their “mini-game” series, and here the focus is on very simple pattern matching and set collection.

Ready, Set, Race

Essentially this game is a race to complete as many llamas in matching tops and bottoms as possible before the time runs out. On your turn, you flip a card and if it shows llama trousers, you can keep it. If it shows a pyjama top that matches one of your llama bottoms, you can also keep it and complete your llama. But if it’s a top that doesn’t match any of your bottoms, you must discard it and the next player can choose whether to collect it or draw from the deck. The time limit is set by a 4-tile tableau depicting a colourful bedtime scene. A tile gets added to the sleepy scene every time a “llama-clock” card is turned over, and, when the scene is completed, the game is over. Note though, that if a player turns over a llama-clock card and they have a completed llama in their collection, the top half and the llama-clock card get discarded!

Final Thoughts

Llamas in Pyjamas is a fun game which is the perfect size to take out and about. It’s also budget friendly so works well as a rainy-day treat or even a stocking filler at Christmas! We used to play just before jammie time, and a win always got our son into his pjyamas with a super big smile on his face!

The colours are vibrant and the end game trigger of building the bedtime tableau is a lovely tie-in to the jammie based theme. I also love the llama faces – they always make me smile! We played this game so much with our son when he was little and it lasted the distance so it got a big thumbs up for durability from us!

As a parent and a gamer, I love it when my two worlds collide. And there are a whole host of mini games in this series that our son loved when he was younger.

Orchard Toys are a great option for kids’ games that reinforce and help to support development including social, observational, matching, and memory skills. And what can be better than playing a game knowing that it is enriching their minds as well as making them smile? It doesn’t get much better than that!
