Snakes and Ladders Review

There cannot be many folk across the land that haven’t played Snakes and Ladders. What do you think? Have you played? I guess in this digital age and with so many different board games now available it could be very easy for this board game classic to be forgotten.

I’ve recently introduced my young children to this game. They are preschool age and I have been looking for ways to introduce them to board games within their capability and understanding. This one ticks those boxes.

Rules of play.

The board layout is a 10 by 10 square grid. The numbers 1 up to 100 printed on the 100 squares. As well as numerous snakes and ladders of all different lengths.

The game is for 2-6 players. Players take in turns rolling a single d6 dice. On their turn roll the dice and move that many squares along, If you hit a ladder, move your playing piece up the ladder. Hit the head of a snake and fall back down the board to the tip of the snake’s tail.

First player to square 100 is the winner. Some rules note you need the correct number to end otherwise if you roll too high you bounce back off the 100. We do not play that way, that is just a house will. If you get to 100, you win!

Problems with the game.

This game has huge flaws in it. It is a game purely driven off of the luck of a player’s dice roll. A player has no influence in the outcome. Strategy, tactics, choice, none of it exists in this game. The best you can do is different ways of rolling the dice.

This makes the game very painful to play and very uninteresting. Particularly if you repeatedly hit snakes and go backwards. There’s nothing you can do. Don’t get me wrong, hitting the base of a ladder is a lot of fun and climbing closer to the finish line.

The game can just drag though as no thought is required. Depending on your children also, patience can wear thin and frustrations set in as a result. So tread carefully here.

Why am I blogging about it?

Good question as my above section is hardly positive. I picked this game because it is also the perfect choice for introducing basic gaming mechanics to young children as there is not much happening that they need to think about. They are, however, learning to take turns in play, they are learning how to share.

They are learning to feel the elation and excitement when something goes well. Like climbing ladders. They are learning to feel disappointment when they hit a snake and fall.

Critically they are learning to win and lose and what that feels like. My children are not yet aware they have no choice to make in the game. They are enjoying the shared experience of a board game with family and all the excitement and social interaction that brings for them. They love it. It doesn’t matter that it is an awful board game. They are having fun playing and that is the only thing that matters for me as a parent. I want them to enjoy their experiences. I want them to learn and feel disappointment if the result doesn’t go their way, but if they had a great time along the way, then perhaps that outweighs the final result.

Final Thoughts

Snakes and Ladders is a classic board game for sure. It probably isn’t the family go to game any more due to how many better games are now out there and available to play. For young children just starting out in games, it is an absolute gem.

Bananagrams Review

Should You Banana?

Do you like Scrabble, Upwords or Wordle? Are word games your jam? Do you ever want a game you can play anywhere, with up to 8 players? Do you want a game that comes in a banana shaped bag? If any of these questions was even a partial yes, then I implore you to check out Bananagrams.

How Do You Banana?

This is a word game where you are creating your own personal crossword puzzle from the tiles you have. Each player takes 21 scrabble style tiles face down and all together you start flipping them over as quickly as you can. Your random assortment of letters will start aligning in your brain as you connect “quoit” with “naturally”, and wrestle over whether you should overlap at the “t” or the “u”. You all work on your own personal puzzle trying to use up all your letters. You are allowed to dump letters, but for each one you dump into the middle, you must draw three new tiles into your personal pool.

You are all working on your own puzzle, racing to get rid of all your tiles, because the moment someone does, they shout “peel” and every player must draw a new tile. Which may mean you need to dismantle your hard earned crossword and rearrange it to accommodate the “g” you just picked up, or you may be lucky and able to sneak in adding an “s” to make a plural. The “peel” shouts will come thick and fast until there are not enough tiles left in the middle anymore for each player to take one. At that point whoever called peel has their worked checked for mistakes. If there are none then they win, if there are though they are dubbed the rotten banana and must hang their head in shame whilst the others play on.

Who Will Like To Banana?

If you are looking for a game suitable for couples, families and friends to play together then this could be for you. The game is easy to pick up and simple to play, with a little shot of adrenaline as you race to complete the crossword arrangement for your own tiles as quickly as possible. This is a small banana shaped bag containing a small rules leaflet and the plastic letter tiles. You can play it anywhere, inside or outside. We have played this on the side of the pool happily as well as in the park. The tiles are pretty bomb proof so you really can play it anywhere.

Round Up

Bananagrams is a family friendly word game that is really suitable for every household. You do not necessarily need to have the best vocabulary to get a win, you can win with shorter, more basic words, it is mostly about speed. This is not like Scrabble where positioning on the board matters, this is about being quick and ensuring that by the end you have no mistakes. No one else can influence your “board”, it is your own puzzle to work through as best you can.

Floriferous Review

Nature games are my jam. They’re my bread, butter, and filling in my perfect gaming sandwich in fact! And Floriferous is an absolutely beautiful flower filled set collection game by Pencil First Games.

Games are played over 3 “days” where each day has 5 turns (or 7 if you play the extended two player or solo game). The purpose of the game is to collect sets of blooms that satisfy the scoring objectives for that game. These come in the form of end of round public goals (called bounty cards which score higher the earlier you can achieve them) or private goals (called desire cards which score at end game and can be collected during the game).

After laying out the garden (which are rows of flower cards and desire cards) each turn you move your meeple one step (either left to right or right to left depending on the “day”) on from your previous position. And turn order depends on your position in the column relative to other players. Some cards in the next column will be face up, others face down. The card you take is the card you add to your collection. It could be a flower, or it could be a desire card. If there are any stones on top of the card you just picked, you get to take those too! And that’s handy because the player with the most stones at end game gets a thirst quenching Cup of tea card worth 2 points!

After the third day is over, the winner is the collector with the most points from flowers, stones, desire, and bounty cards (and there’s also sculpture cards in the multiplayer game which score for the player with the most sculptures at end game).

Final Thoughts

I love playing Floriferous. Confession time though; my favourite mode is solo against the Pesky Crow automa. It’s so simple to operate and it is so mean! I don’t know how but it always knows which card I am going to need and swoops in and takes it! Any way you play Floriferous, however, is fun though. There’s a constant tension between taking a flower to fulfil a goal, taking a goal to gain points at end game, and placing your pawn in a position that gets you the position in the turn order you are going to need next. Collecting stones and sculptures won’t help in achieving goals but they are worth points too, so add another layer to the delightful decision making process. There are also bouquet cards which don’t require a desire or bounty card to score but will need you to have a combination of blooms somewhere in your collection by end game. Only being able to use a card once for each Bounty reward is another terrifically thorny element. Desire cards can double up on the necessary blooms but public objectives need unique specimens.

This game has a really fun push your luck type vibe when you reach for flowers in the hope that the gamble will pay off at end game. And needless to say it is absolutely beautiful to look at. All the components are gorgeous, and the box is definitely not a shelf-hog. For us it works at all player counts and has fast become one of my go-to solo games!
