Sun Safety for Kids

We’re just about to enter the warmer months, fingers crossed! This means we’re wanting to spend more time outdoors, flocking to our gardens, parks, and beaches. The hot weather feels delightful but carries a bit of a risk. Here at Toy Street, we love outdoor toys, meaning we’re all up on our sun safety! We put on our SPF 30+ and replenish it every 2 hours. We wear our big hats and funky sunglasses, and we find a bit of shade every now and then!

Nonetheless, we love the sun and have decided to share our favourite toys to play with in the sun!

Top 6 Ty Teddies

In the 1990s, Ty’s Beanie Babies were all the rage and some collectors even treated them like highly valuable works of art. Sadly, the bears didn’t end up quite as valuable as some thought and the Beanie Baby bubble did eventually burst. Since then, Ty has launched more toys in a range of collections from Baby Ty to the wide-eyed Beanie Boos and it seems like Ty is back on top form! Today we look at the best Ty Teddies.

Top 5 Toys from Mary Meyer – Brand Spotlight

We are super excited to have the Mary Meyer collection here at Toy Street! Mary Meyer has a great range of soft toys for babies and young children. Today we’re taking a closer look at Mary Meyer in our first brand spotlight.

History

Mary Meyer herself (yes, she was a real person!) was born in New York in 1904. As a little girl, her mother taught her to sew, allowing her to fix up the family’s hats, blouses and pants. Her keen interest in fashion and style came from her father, who was the manager of one of the finest hotels in New York City.

She specialised in sewing at school, where she learned how to create pincushions in the shapes of animals. Before long, people were requesting their own animal pin cushions and from this the idea of stuffed toy animals was made.

In 1930, Mary Meyer and her husband decided to set up a business selling her most popular pieces. The Great Depression had left the USA in an economic crisis, yet the business still managed to thrive. Her husband Hans went on the road selling their range of toys and Mary would eagerly await to hear which products were the most popular, so she could make more of them.

In the early 1940s, the Meyer family moved to Vermont and set up a barn which eventually became their first toy factory. 80 years later, the Mary Meyer brand is still going strong, being one of the last American stuffed toy companies to move their production overseas.

Mary Meyer Today

Although the production of the Mary Meyer toys now happens outside America, the designs still continue to come from Vermont. With a product library of over 400 toys and over 80 years since the production of the first Mary Meyer toy, the business is still going strong.

The brand still has the family feel still at the heart of everything they produce, with Mary’s grandsons running the business to this day.

Donating Educational Toys to Primary Schools

Thanks to the generosity of Toy Street customers, we have been able to donate educational toys and games worth hundreds of pounds to local primary schools.

In the last few years, lots of people have experienced the challenges of home-schooling first-hand. Covid restrictions meant fewer and fewer ways to keep children occupied. When schools closed and many families had to return to home-schooling, we decided to offer our support.

Toy Street Donations

We set out about contacting local primary schools and donating educational toys and games to help make home-learning more engaging. We invited our customers to donate towards this initiative when checking out on our website. Many customers made generous donations, allowing us to offer educational games to so many children across our home city, Norwich.

We have been able to reach out to eight local primary schools, offering them each a large bundle of educational toys and games. These bundles included a range of games to encourage essential reading, writing, maths, and science learning. Many of the games also help children to learn real-life skills such as problem-solving and using money.

Clover Hill VA Infant and Nursery School and St Michael’s VA Junior School

The bundles have all been gratefully accepted. Mrs Helen McCarney, executive headteacher of Clover Hill VA Infant and Nursery School and St Michael’s VA Junior School in Norwich, said:

“As soon as we gave the games to the children who are presently in school during this lockdown period, they couldn’t wait to open the boxes and start playing. They have such fun playing the games that they don’t realise that they are learning too! I am pleased to see such a wide variety of activities, topics, and means of presentation. The games and toys help the children to explore the topics and concepts in a really fun way. It has been great for the children’s social skills too. They miss working together and playing so these games have come out regularly and are always happily played! Thank you so much to Toy Street!”
